The town of Volgodonsk is located in the eastern part of the Rostov region (in the southern European part of Russia, between the large industrial cities of Rostov-on-Don and Volgograd, and in immediate proximity to the capitals of large territories of the Russian Federation, Stavropol, Krasnodar and Elista.) It is bordered in the north by the Konstantinovski and Tsemlyanski districts, in the east by the Dubovski and Zimovnikovski districts, in the south by the Martinovski district, and in the west by the Semikarakorski district. Volgodonsk is a town subject to the region. Distance from Rostov-on-Don, 250 km. Area of the town, 238 sq. km., the industrial and warehousing zones make up 10 sq. km. and the green zone covers 16 sq. km.
The climate is continental with a moderately cold winter with little snow and a warm and sunny summer. Average annual temperature 8.2° C.
History
The town of Volgodonsk owes its birth to post-war construction on a massive scale in the country – the building of the Volga-Don canal. Built to service the people of the Tsemlyansk Sea (reservoir), it has grown from a small settlement. The erection of residential homes on the territory of the town began on 27th June 1950. This is the date that the town council took as the date of the foundation of the city in 1973.

Volgodonsk is a town with multi-facted industrial potential, with the development of the energy, machine-building, chemical and woodworking industries. 671 active industrial enterprises are registered here. From the beginning of the Volgodonsk Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) in March 2001 Volgodonsk has become the largest energy centre in the south of Russia. The main businesses in the town are: the Joint Stock Company, Atommash, the Volgodonsk industrial complex of wood boards Ltd., and the Volgodonsk NPP. The building sector of the economy has a powerful foundation of production. Within its framework the production of building materials has developed.
The industrial production of the town is exported to a lot of countries of the CIS, and the world. Like the Busher NPP (Iran), and the Tianwan NPP (China), the Joint Stock Company, Atommash is ready for the manufacture of most complex goods: fuel-handling machines, airlocks for staff, pressurizers, heat and biological protection. In addition, there is a demand for the production of the firms, Closed Joint Stock Company Joint-venture FAM and the Volgodonsk industrial complex of wood boards Ltd. in the CIS and foreign countries.
The consumer market of the town comprises 1,164 active businesses: 898 retail trade, 60 wholesale warehouses, 160 enterprises in the catering trade, 12 markets and 34 petrol stations.
Volgodonsk is an industrial-trade centre with twelve agricultural districts and over 600 thousand hectares of arable land. The location of Volgodonsk, in the middle of an expansive agrarian area, with high potential possibilities for the production of agricultural produce, thanks to a network of irrigation canals and farming which requires watering, gives the town the chance to become the centre of introduction of advanced technology of processing agricultural produce. The main area of agricultural production is the cultivation of grain, bean and melon and gourd crops, sunflowers, corn, rice, buckwheat, vegetables and fruit.

Transport
While giving the town life, the Volga-Don shipping canal can give the town a second wind in development. Connected by waterways to five seas – the White and Baltic in the north, the Caspian in the east, the Azov and the Black in the south – the port of Volgodonsk has strategic importance. The Volgodonsk port has access to 100 large ports in 22 countries of the world, and by the Danube and Rhine rivers, the Danube basin countries. Apart from the river port, external relations of the town are provided by the presence of an airport, a railway station, a coach station and a developed network of roads. At present work is being carried out on the building of a federally important highway, Morozov-Tsemlyansk-Volgograd, with a bridge crossing over the river Don. The capital invested in the development of the Volgodonsk transport junction not only increases the passage through Volgodonsk of transported loads in the regions of Russia, and in foreign countries, but also provides conditions for its integration into the European and World transport network

Regardless of its youth the town has its own traditions. Great attention is paid to children. In the town there is a studio theatre, musical, art and theatre schools, a school of the arts and a children’s centre of spiritual development, a local folk museum, palaces of culture, cinemas and libraries. The existence in the town of higher educational establishments and their branches, technical colleges, and professional-technical establishments lets the necessary number of specialists be trained.
The town of Volgodonsk is a member of the Association of towns of Southern Russia. Within the framework of the association festivals of the young people of the Association of towns of Southern Russia often take place in the town.
Holding the all-Russia young pianist competition in Volgodonsk has also become traditional.
Georgi Likhovid and Alexander Neumyvakin, artists famous far without the boundaries of Russia, live and work in the town.
Volgodonsk has great sporting traditions. Among the inhabitants there is 1 world champion, 2 European champions and 1 Olympic participant. There are three teams of great sportsmen in the town who compete in the Championship of Russia among teams of the higher leagues: the women’s hockey team, Donchanka, the women’s volleyball team, Impulse, and the women’s water-polo team, Yunost.
The team, Donchanka, is a seven-time Champion of Russia, a twice-holder of the Russian Cup, holder of the European Champions’ Cup, and the European countries’ Cup of Cups.

In order to ressurrect the traditions of the Cossacks one of the first Cossack cadet institutes on the Don operates in the town. In 2003 the unique Museum of Cossack Life and Craftsmanship was opened, where such Don handicrafts as blacksmithing and harness-work, basket-weaving, weaving and lace-making etc. are demonstrated.
The medical institutions of Volgodonsk, health centres, clinics, general hospitals, an obstetric-gynocological centre, a centre of pshychiatric health for disabled children and dispensaries provide the inhabitants of the town with all types of specialised medical help, including methods of diagnosis and treatment. In the town there is a branch of the regional hospital for veterans of the Great Patriotic War (1941-5). The healthcare of the town has, for some years firmly held the number one place in the region.
The educational network in the town of Volgodonsk is represented by 78 educational institutes and branches of the leading higher educational establishments of Southern Russia, including the Rostov State University, the Southern Russian State Transport University, the Rostov State Pedagogical University, the Don State Agrarian University and many others. A lot of work is undertaken with talented and gifted students, with the aim of developing their creative abilities. Within the limits of the realization of the town’s programme, Gifted Children, annually subject Olympiads, scientific-practical conferences with the attraction of the staff of higher educational establishments, competitions and the summer and winter examination sessions of schools for gifted children are held. Since the opening of a branch of the Regional Centre for work with gifted children on the basis of state secondary school ¹24, in which the Malaya Academy of Science works, alongside Sunday schools, the school scientific society and the mathematic correspondence school under the MIPT (Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology), work with gifted children has been specially stimulated. The further educational Centre, Raduga, which is developing the project, ‘the technology of creating models of educational establishment, directed towards the active socialisation of the personality of a child,’ is a Federal experimental area.
The beauty of Don nature, the favourable climate, and the closeness of the Don and the Tsemlyank Sea make rest and relaxation in the beneficial places of Volgodonsk tempting and attractive. On the banks of the Don and the shore of the Tsemlyansk Sea a real health and fitness complex has been created and continues to develop: holiday homes, guest houses, children’s summer camps, health spas and tourist bases.
